The Facts:
Captain
America Civil War was filled to the brim with fan favourite characters, both
old and newly introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. One such character
that sliced, diced and ran away with many MCU fan’s hearts was Black Panther; so
of course he was going to get his very own standalone movie. And now Marvel has
deemed it fit to release the first trailer for Black Panther to start our little
nerdy hearts beating that bit faster and to make our mouths drool slightly more
than usual in anticipation of its release.

The
trailer was released to the interwebs on June 9th and currently has
11,930,715 views on Marvel Entertainment’s official YouTube channel with 326,838
likes to 11,148 dislikes.
Black
Panther will be Marvel’s first black superhero lead movie and will be taking
place after the explosive and divisive events of Civil War as we continue to
follow T’Challa, the Black Panther, as he ascends to become the ruler of his
African nation – Wakanda - after the
tragic death of his father.
And such
a momentous movie for Marvel has an appropriately all-star cast to bring the
king of Wakanda’s journey to life. Chadwick Boseman will reprise his role as
the formidable king and protector the Black Panther, as well as the before seen
Andy Serkis as the villainous, ironically armless arms dealer, Klaw and Martin
Freeman as government stooge Everett K. Ross.

Joining
them in their big MCU debut is Michael B. Jordan as Erik Killmonger, as his
name suggests, not particularly a friend of T’Challa’s and his main adversary
for the movie.
Black
Panther is being directed by Ryan Coogler (Creed) and will be released
Februrary 9th, 2018. But don’t worry if that seems too far away and
your marvel needing heart just can’t take the wait; you’ll still be getting sweet,
sweet servings of Marvel goodness this year from Spider-Man: Homecoming this July
7th and Thor’s gladiatorial return
on October 27th in Thor Ragnarok.
IBRO:
This trailer snuck up out of nowhere. Everyone just opened up
their various apps and boom, a Black Panther sized sneak attack had been done
on the internet. With that there was no anticipation for the trailer, no
excitement for getting to see it going in, unlike there was with the huge amount
of fanfare around the release of the almost perfect first trailer for
Spider-Man: Homecoming. And honestly, Black Panther was cool in Civil War, had
some really technically amazing fight scenes and lead one particularly epic car/superpowerd
foot chase, but he didn’t steal my heart or leave me biting at the bit for
more. So with all that in-mind, this first trailer for Black Panther didn’t
really do much for me.

That being said, the action showcased in this trailer does
look as cool and ferocious as we were treated to in Civil War, with the
choreography looking to once again emphasise his unique animalistic style of
fighting and Vibranium woven all black suit. I mean just seeing him take out
un-knowing, AK wielding jerks in the jungles of Wakanda before they even know
what smashed them into the side of their trucks, and that ending flip from one exploding
car to another still moving at high speeds was pretty damn epic and shows they
won’t be dropping his badass qualities that everyone fell in love with in Civil
War.
And Wakanda itself, up-until-now a land of the MCU shrouded
in legends and mystery, does look to be getting a cool, almost primal Sci-Fi
aesthetic that looks to make T’Challa’s home be like nothing else seen in the
MCU. I am scared though that Wakanda may feel like an in-cohesive, flat and
lifeless backdrop rather than a believable living and breathing land that of
course has super-duper high tech inventions because it organically makes sense
and not just because that is how it is in the comics. And from what we saw in
the trailer, which is not very much, we’ll have to see which way that particular
cookie crumbles.
But the main reason the trailer for Black Panther didn’t
leave me with any real lasting impressions is because it had no substance.
After seeing the trailer I have no idea on what the plot is, what T’Challa will
be facing now he has been unexpectedly thrust into being king of this
technologically advanced and secretive land, and even who the main antagonist
of this movie is. From casting reports and other outside stories it can be
found out, but solely from the trailer itself, you can barely even tell who a
bad guy is unless you specifically see Black Panther’s clawed hand smash right
into their face, then it’s a pretty good bet they’re not who you’re supposed to
be routing for.

Don’t get me wrong though, I am still looking forward to
seeing this movie and how Marvel and Coogler will adapt such a unique and royal
take on being a superhero and how the politics T’Challa has to contend with will
mix with his duty of kick assery.
Overall the Black Panther trailer didn’t blow me away, or
really make a dent in my mind, but its action does look cool, and I am hopeful
for an interesting and divergent corner of the MCU to be revealed to us in a
spectacular and entertaining way, just as Doctor Strange’s magical dimension
jumping adventures were last year.
