BurtonReviews’ Top 3 Games of Sony’s Paris Games Week Conference
(Image sourced from https://blog.us.playstation.com/2017/10/02/playstation-live-from-paris-games-week-watch-october-30/)
This past
week saw yet another gaming convention/conference go by in the form of Paris
Games week. And with Sony promoting their conference as a “part 2” to their E3 spectacle
from this past summer, plenty of juicy, eye popping, jaw dropping tidbits and
new cinematic trailers have been released. And that, my friends, is why all of
your YouTube subscription pages have been exploding with videos over the past two
days, overwhelming right? But don’t worry, because BurtonReviews is here to
help show you what the real show stoppers of the conference were.
And what a
conference it was, while not as (literally) explosive as E3’s bonkers-bonanza,
Sony just knows how to put on a well-produced, well-paced, and well-executed
show. With a gigantic video-wall showering down on the crowd below the best
PlayStation has to offer, and that is a lot, the show felt epic, way shorter
than it actually was, and most importantly, made the tangible excitement felt
in the conference hall palpable even all the way over here in ye-old England.
But, without
further-ado, here are BurtonReviews’ top 3 moments of the show.

3. Ghost of Tsushima:
After what has felt like eons of silence
from the acclaimed first party studio Sucker Punch (Sly Cooper, inFAMOUS), Sony
has finally unveiled what they have been working on for so long. Used as the
conference’s introductory kick through the screen, Ghost of Tsushima will do
what no Assassin’s Creed game has yet (sadly) and transport us back to feudal
Japan, the 1274 Mongol invasion specifically. A land of honourable samurais and
scary sharp katana’s, the debut trailer showed us some beautiful landscapes
that looked as if they almost jumped out of a painting. But this beauty is not
to last long, even in the trailer, as the Mongol invasion tears both Japan’s
lands and people apart. In this third-person action open-world you will take up
the sword of a wronged samurai looking for vengeance and to bring peace back to
your land. While the trailer didn’t show any actual gameplay footage, the
pedigree of Sucker Punch being behind this game, plus the games aim of taking
us back to an accurate historic feudal Japan, instantly makes this a
PlayStation exclusive to keep an eye on.

2. The Last of Us Part II
Can Naughty Dog do no wrong. A game
none of us thought we’d even hear a peep out of after it’s surprising and
ultimately exciting debut at last year’s PSX, The Last of Us Part II once again
graced our screens with some more brutal yet beautiful footage. Following unnamed,
new, unknown characters, the new footage viciously nails in the much darker
tone of the upcoming and highly anticipated sequel. And with the mystery of who
the-hell was actually in the footage still unanswered, it looks like The Last
of Us Part II has a lot more surprises up its sleeves than first thought, but
with not even a release window put on screen after the bloody encounter, it
looks like we all have a long time to wait to see exactly what those surprises
will be.

1. Spider-Man Story Trailer
And to top off the list (of course),
is the trailer that had me literally squealing with joy when I saw it pop-up on
my FaceBook feed. After an awe inspiring gameplay-demo showcased at E3 this year,
it was already clear that Insomniac’s take on the iconic wall-crawler was going
to be fantastic, and this story trailer only further proved that. With more of
a focus on Peter Parker being highlighted here, we get to see how a more mature
Parker navigates the world. From the eye-watering visuals and explosive
set-pieces, to the already personal and rising stakes, to how this game looks
to be perfectly meshing Peter Parker and Spider-Man’s worlds into one cohesive
vision, as it should be, this game looks to be the experience any Spidey fan
has been desperately clambering for ever since they first tried to climb up their
bedroom wall when they were six…what, just me?
Those were the three biggest
games of the conference, but there were a lot of smaller games that might have
flown right beneath your radar, and that just can’t stand. So here are
BurtonReviews’ honourable mentions from the show (and preshow).

Hong Kong Massacre:
Set to
release in 2018, this games stylish and beautiful trailer brings back memories
of Hotline Miami in all the best ways for what looks like another brutal
bullet-hell of fun.

Oure:
The ‘game that you can
play right now’ of the show, Oure’s water-painting-esque and art design is very
reminiscent of indie darling Journey. Add all that beautiful style to playing
as a girl who can turn into a dragon that must make sure titans are getting
back to work, and you have an interesting and gorgeous looking experience in
your hands.

Sprint Vector:
The first of two
PSVR games that caught my eye, this one looks like you’re playing a bonkers
racing/obstacle game, except instead of being in a car, your running around
like you’re the Flash, what more could you want.

Stifled:
The other PSVR title on
the list, Stifled is a really innovative take on the horror genre. Become a
less ninja-capable DareDevil as you use sonar to help illuminate your
surroundings. But don’t make too much noise, or the creature from your
sweatiest nightmare will find you and do god-knows what with you. Halloween may
have just gone, but getting so scared you kick yourself in the balls isn’t
seasonal.

And there you have it, the
essential games of the show to YouTube the trailers for and wish you could play
them right now. While the conference as a whole wasn’t the mind-blowing time
Sony maybe over-promised, what it did do, very effectively, was show off some
even more incredible footage of games that were already hard to wait for, and now
it just feels damn impossible. I’ll be here re-watching the Spider-Man trailer
another gazillion times.
But while you’re here, what did you think of this conference?
