Spider-Man Homecoming Trailer released: Thwips and Quips

Marvel fans rejoiced this past Thursday night as the first trailer for the highly anticipated Spider-Man Homecoming was debuted by the latest in a long line of Peter Parkers, Tom Holland, on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

The official YouTube trailer at the time of writing has over 14 million views and over 200 thousand likes.
The film will not only follow the Spider-Man that endearingly stole our hearts in this year’s explosive blockbuster, Captain America Civil War, but will also be the character’s first solo movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), as the wall-crawler is back home and in the trusty hands of Marvel Studios.
And highlighting Spider-Man’s rightful inclusion in the ever-growing universe of the MCU is Robert Downey Jr’s appearance as Tony Stark/Ironman in the film. Looking to be continuing his mentoring role for the young “Spiderling”, Downey looks to be bringing his great charisma to this already charming as-hell looking film, and Stark himself looks to be a good framing device, fitting Spidey perfectly into the wider MCU.

The film is being directed by Jon Watts, responsible for indie hits such as Clown and Cop Car, who is bringing a 70s/80s high school movie vibe to the film that looks to be perfectly meshing with what makes this character so amazing and relatable, the fact that he’s just a kid with spectacular abilities who is both trying to help anyone in need and get his homework in on time.
To be honest, as a huge Spider-Man fan who’s been obsessed with the character ever since the 2002 Spider-Man film starring Tobey Maguire, this trailer is just perfect. From the comedic tone that the trailer opens with that has made me laugh every time I’ve watched the trailer (9 times now), to seeing Peter have to struggle through being the awkward nerdy kid at school, this is the depiction of Spider-Man we’ve all been waiting for. A perfect mix of enthusiasm, funny one liners, naivety, and an unrelenting need to do good that the past Spider-Men, Maguire and Andrew Garfield, have tried to capture, but have been just shy of the mark. Here though it looks like Holland is continuing to preserve this winning combo brilliantly from his show stealing appearance in Captain America Civil War.
The main antagonist of the film, Vulture (played by Michael Keaton, who ironically starred in the Oscar winning Birdman in 2015) not only has a pretty cool get-up, especially when in comparison to his green skin tight spandex and feathered wings of his comics debut in 1964,  as in the film he sports a fighter-pilot-esque jacket and helmet menacingly pronounced with two piercing green dots for eyes with some high-tech, jet-propelled wings that give Falcon a run for his money; but Vulture also looks to be an intimidating foe for Spidey to really see what it’s like to play with the big boys in this world of gods and flying suits of armour.

Overall this trailer just looks perfect. MGMT’s Time to Pretend playing over the majority of the trailer gives us a great feel for the film’s high school atmosphere. The fact that we’re finally getting the quip hurling Spider-Man from the comics in a costume that not only looks incredible, but faithfully brings to life the iconic look from the comics (web wings and all), AND that this is all being produced by a stellar cast, least of all Tom Holland, who is on track to becoming THE definitive Spider-Man as he follows in the very hallowed footsteps of Hugh Jackman and Robert Downey Jr. who just now are Wolverine and Ironman, respectively, makes this film really have a good shot at becoming one of the best that the MCU has produced.
The film will be released in 2017 on July 7th and I really cannot wait that long. Guess we’ll just have to watch the trailer another million times to tide us over.
Speaking of it seems about time for my 10th watch of the incredible thing, and if you’re joining me in my constant loop of watching and re-watching the trailer, since you’re already on YouTube why not check out my YouTube channel, BurtonReviews, where I upload awesome gaming montages put to badass songs or scores every Sunday.
