Logan Trailer Released: Old dog, new tricks

[Article has R-rated content]
X Men fanatics were treated to the trailer for the 3rd and last Wolverine movie, named Logan, on the 20th October.
With over 10 million views under its belt and over 100 thousand likes and only just over 2 thousand dislikes on the official 20th Century Fox trailer on YouTube, it’s safe to say it was met by an overwhelmingly positive reception.
The trailer is dripping with style from the very off-set with an amazing choice of trailer music in the form of Johnny Cash’s Hurt. The sombre and heavy tone of the lyrics and guitar notes pairs perfectly with this bleak and ravaged future for mutant kind that Logan has found himself in and shows great signs for the grounded and gritty direction this movie is going for.
Continuing the trailers sense of unique style is the settings seen in this trailer. No more big mansions or sci-fi tech demos, Logan is firmly rooted in a broken real world with barren desert-like lands and dark looming forests, all of this film feels like it’s taking Wolverine down to his bare bones and this deconstruction of the famous characters looks to be a brutal and emotional ride.
Hugh Jackman is returning as the titular character for the very last time after nine appearances (if you count his face being stapled to Deadpool’s) as the gruff and spikey Canadian. And this movie seems to be shaping up to be a great, and deserved send off for the actor that has and will be the definitive Wolverine for centuries to come.

With a more serious and brutal feel to the film, what looks like to be taking many ques from the Old Man Logan comic book series released in 2008 by Mark Miller, not only does this trailer feel like a new and interesting direction for the X Men franchise but also a great personal story where we’ll be able to really get into the mind of our favourite angry Canadian before saying our teary goodbye to the clawed icon.
Also returning as a mutant icon is Patrick Stewart, refilling the role of Charles Xavier for what also may be the last time. After the happy ever after that Days of Future Past gave the character, it pulls at my heart strings to see the peaceful mutant leader to be being put through such a brutal existence. And the pairing of these two fan favourites are the makings of a really emotional and intense movie for fans of the series.
New comers to the cast include an army of cybernetic goons, who from the trailer don’t look too interesting but with the films main antagonist said to be the devious Mister Sinister, I’m still holding out hope for a worthy threat for Wolverine overcome before hanging up the shredded and blood splattered white vest he always seems to have spares of.

But the more interesting addition is the mutant child Wolverine is reluctantly taking care who is “like you [Wolverine], very much like you.” Apart from giving this film a welcomed The Last Of Us vibe (I’ve always said Hugh Jackman would be a phenomenal Joel), her possibility at continuing the Wolverine legacy is one that has me and other fans riled with excitement.
After Deadpool’s R rated success it was only a matter of time till Wolverine would get the same bloody treatment. And this trailer gratifyingly shows it. The action in the movie looks to be intense, vicious and just the right amount of gore with two scenes from the trailer raising my eye brow of intrigue. One most people don’t care about, which is the shoulder cam looking footage which happily  invokes memories of the gloriously violent Hardcore Henry and the obvious moment is one that was reserved for the R rated trailer. Yes. That head stab.

Both give me buckets of hope for us to see the most animalistic and comic faithful adaptation of Wolverine’s uncontainable violent side that we’ve only received a sneak-peek at up to this point.
Overall this trailer looks to give the X Men franchise the boost of adrenalin many critics have said it needs by taking it in a refreshing grotty and unique feeling direction for the genre as well as a deeply emotional and personal story for Jackman’s swan song.
The movie is being directed by James Mangold, who directed The Wolverine, and will be released in the UK and US on the 3rd March 2017, and that date cannot come soon enough.
