Star Wars Episode 8 The Last Jedi gets its first trailer at Star Wars Celebration 2017: What We Need is a Training Montage

The Facts:
In London, from April 13th – 16th, the O2 arena was bursting with new and exclusive Star Wars goodness. From Fans exceptional cosplay, to coffee tables based on the Sarlacc pit, and of course trailers for all the upcoming on-screen Star Wars goodness. But one trailer has left it’s ever iconic rebellious mark on the interwebs.

First shown at Star Wars celebration, and then released online on the 14th of April, The Last Jedi’s first official teaser has garnered 30,575,583 views on the official Star Wars YouTube page. With 542,254 likes and 22,977 dislikes.

The eight episode in this space opera epic will follow on directly from the explosive events of 2015s nerd culture shaking re-emergence of Star Wars on the big screen; appropriately called The Force Awakens.

The whole cast will be returning to their iconic roles, with this trailer specifically showing Daisy Ridley as the newly padawoned Rey, John Boyega as wounded rebellious storm trooper Finn, Oscar Isaac as charismatic rebellion pilot Poe Dameron, Adam Driver as Sith apprentice Kylo Ren, Mark Hamill as the now speaking Luke Skywalker, and the late Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia Organa.

Taking over from J.J. Abrams in the director’s chair will be Rian Johnson (Looper), while the legendary John Williams will be returning to score the latest chapter from the galaxy far far away.

The film will release on the 15th of December this year.

IBRO:
Honestly, this trailer didn’t blow my socks off like every trailer on the lead up to The Force Awakens did. But it did have its highlights, so let’s start on them.
John Williams’ score, which hauntingly played throughout the trailer, was damn incredible. Effortlessly foreboding the darker tone this movie will take from the relatively happy and go lucky skew of the majority of Episode 7, the score’s heavier hand gave this trailer a much darker feeling than the hopeful tunes that were given to 2015s trailers, already showing that this movie is not messing around, it is a Star War after all.
Visually The Force Awakens made my eyeballs explode with happiness, and I’m happy to see that The Last Jedi aims to do the same thing. The eerie yet beautiful visuals displayed in this teaser already display hints of some grand and epic cinematography that I can’t wait to drool through my eyes for.

However while the visuals looked great, there were only so many far off shots of beautiful landscapes that I could take in this 2 minute and 12 second teaser. Outside of a few tantalising moments, those ships trailing red smoke looked epic, the visuals of the trailer really brought nothing new to the table in terms of actual information.
And that goes for what was said in the trailer too. So far all we know is, is that Rey is in Jedi training. But we knew that from the end of the Force Awakens two years ago almost. While no one wants this movie spoiled by the very first trailer, we could at least hope for something that gets us biting at the bit, excitedly theorising and delving deep into our vast library of Star Wars knowledge to try and figure out what this next big step in the franchise may mean. As it is the trailer just reminded us that Star Wars is cool and its coming this December, again.

So really, this trailer failed at being a trailer. Sure it showed off some gorgeous visuals and showed that, once again, John Williams is one of the best movie musicians ever born, but it didn’t give the fans anything substantially new to chew and obsess on until the release in December, like all good trailer strive to do.

But hey, it’s Star Wars, I’m still really excited and can’t wait to see Rey become the badass Jedi for a new generation.

Those were my thoughts on the trailer that made the internet stand still, what are your thoughts? Comment below and whilst you’re here, why not check out my YouTube channel, BurtonReviews, where I upload awesome gaming montages put to badass songs or scores every Sunday.
