BurtonReviews Bethesdaland: Best Name for a Conference Ever.

After a disappointing speed bump on the E3 hype train’s tracks (which honestly I have no idea how that physically would even work) Bethesda’s short but sweet/terrifying/brutal conference came running into the room uncontrollably giggling  after eating way too much candy, with one goal, to show us how freakin damn fun video games are. And you know what, they freakin succeeded.

As the title of this article and their press conference suggests, Bethesda framed their conference like a tour through an astonishingly varied, loud, crazy-fun theme park and this adorable way to get from game to game not only kept the pace of the conference refreshingly brisk, but was a delight to see these developers have fun with their beloved properties.

1.    DOOM and Fallout 4 VR Support: Welcome, to the Futuuure
First on the tour was the VR editions of Bethesda’s smash hits DOOM and Fallout 4. While he games do look to be more of the same, the inclusion of VR is sure to make them as engrossing and heart pounding as ever, especially DOOM, and have your sick buckets at the ready for that literal break-neck experience.

2.    Skyrim: Switching it Up
Next we finally got some conformation for a game that turned up out of nowhere on the Nintendo Switch reveal trailer, and as fast as it appeared, it also disappeared into the shadows. Skyrim for Nintendo Switch is not only real, but actually coming out. While an old last generation port to a next generation console isn’t too much to get excited about, the Link skin shown at the conference does add abit of Nintendo flavoured spice to the old delicacy that gives fans of Nintendo and Bethesda yet another thing to appreciate.

3.    Dishonoured 2 DLC: Bat Out of Hell
Speaking of old-ish games being given a new splattering of spice to shake them up, Dishonoured 2 will be getting a piece of story DLC titled Death of the Outsider. Any fans of the series will involuntarily have their eyes widen just by the mere sight of the title as the DLC sees returning characters Meagan and Daud (the latter voiced by Michael Madsen), hunt down the mysterious man with black eyes that up until now has been a lingering force of nature in the Dishonoured universe, effecting each game and granting you the super-sleuth powers that allow you to become the knife wielding terror of Dunwell. With only a cinematic trailer shown at the conference there isn’t much else to go on, but the interesting premise and the high calibre set by past Dishonour story DLC, I am more than looking forward to this extra chapter of Bethesda’s premiere stealth game.

4.    The Evil Within 2: Hug Me I’m Scared
Next was the terrifying portion of Bethesdaland. Every theme park has there spooky section, Alton Towers has 13, Bethesdaland had an insane psychedelic-horror trip of a cinematic trailer for The Evil Within 2 that I just could not take my eyes off for the entirety of its joint twisting narrative. One of the major reasons I was so mesmerised by it was because of just how well it was directed. From the eerie music throughout, to the insane and ever morphing visuals that would hauntingly flit from dark and dirty haunted woodlands, to off puttingly clean and white ooze that consumed whatever it touched wholly. Couple with that a narrative about a broken detective and his dead daughter, you have a damn compelling trailer that’s making me almost want to go back and see how the first was.

1.    Wolfenstein The New Colossus: Me and Hospital Beds Have a Bad History
And finally, after being teased since last E3 in the cool meta opening of the 2016 conference, we got our first trailer for the sequel to Wolfenstein The New Order, The New Colossus. Looking to pick-up where the last game left off, BJ Blazkowicz, our favourite anti-Nazi war hero, wakes up once again worse for wear in a hospital bed, this time being saved by the loveable cast of heroes he accumulated throughout the first game. From here the usual course of bullet hell and skull crunching violence ensues as Blazkowicz tries to raise a rebel army to crush the controlling Nazi force in America.
The trailer oozed the old Americana vibe that the first game embraced so beautifully, especially in the fun Nazi themed television that showed just how messed up this what-if universe had become that opened the trailer.
Simply but the trailer was a kick ass way to introduce the sequel to the beloved reboot of the granddaddy of all first person shooters, and looks to be the same old fashioned bullet hurling fun that the first game was and I can’t wait to jump right back into the good fight with BJ and his merry band of quirky men and women.

Another day of E3 done, another set of games to keep your eyes firmly on. And Bethesda knocked this conference out of the park, it was constantly fun, constantly engaging, and while not mind-blowing, had some interesting and exciting updates to franchises we all love and know the company can do great things with.
